一周前，Ubuntu 20.10 正式发布。现在，新版本 21.04 名称已经确定，并展开开发。新版本名称为“ Hirsute Hippo（多毛河马）”。
Hirsute Hippo 暂定发布日期为 2021 年 4 月 22 日。 Ubuntu 版本名称按字母顺序排列，Ubuntu 20.10 代号 “Groovy Gorilla”，“H”紧跟在“G”之后，这已经是 Ubuntu 版本的第三个使用代号“ H”的版本。第一个是 2005 年的 Ubuntu 5.04“ Hoary Hedgehog”。第二是 2008 年的 Ubuntu 8.04 LTS“ Hardy Heron”。
Ubuntu 开发人员 Matthias Klose 28 日在 Ubuntu 邮件列表上称，Hirsute Hippo 现在开放开发，队列中收集的上载现在已获得批准，并且不稳定的同步也被启用。
此开发版本从一个变化开始：现在已将 Python 3.9 添加为受支持的 Python3 版本，目标是在 hirsute 中将 Python 3.9 作为唯一的 Python3 版本发布。
Ubuntu 21.04 可能会包括 GNOME 40, Linux 5.9(或更新的)内核，以及核心软件的更新版本。下一个开发里程碑是 Ubuntu 21.04 的每日构建版本，通常在开发开放后一周左右可以下载。
